The Seafish Basic Health and Safety course aims to provide new entrants to the commercial fishing industry the knowledge and skills required to work safely onboard a commercial fishing vessel. It is a mandatory requirement for everyone before working on a commercial fishing vessel. The course includes an understanding of the language used in the industry, individual roles and responsibilities, the dangers of the job and which skills are required to operate safely on board. 2 Years after completing the Basic Health and Safety course, all candidates must then attend the Seafish Safety Awareness and Risk Assessment course. Both of these courses are a legal requirement to work in the Commercial Fishing Industry.

Small Ships Navigation & Radar

This course covers the basic principles and operation of Radar, Electronic Navigation Aids (including Electronic Chart Systems) and Passage Planning, and consists of equal time in the classroom and in the simulator suite, allowing real time, real ship exercises to be carried out. This course is designed for serving seafarers who hold a certificate of Service or of Competency, who are serving on ships of limited size (under 500 tons) who have not previously undertaken approved training in the use of radar and other electronic navigation systems, and who need to update their qualifications to meet the STCW requirements. Candidates successfully passing the assessment at the end of the course will receive a certificate issued by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency-approved Centre.

The GMDSS GOC (General Operator’s Certificate) is the highest level of radio operator’s licence available to the professional mariner. It meets all STCW conditions and is a requirement for unlimited MCA Certificates of Competence. The GMDSS GOC permits the holder to operate the radio installation on board any vessel operating in any Sea Area, with additional responsibility for equipment testing and undertaking any emergency communications.

EFFICIENT DECK HAND

The Efficient Deck Hand course (EDH) is a theoretical and practical course that develops an understanding of shipboard organisation and operations for crewmembers with a qualified amount of experience on deck. It is a requirement for all MCA certificates of competency with the exception of Master 200. From 1 January 2017, all deckhands progressing towards OOW Yachts (less than 3,000GT) must have held the Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) certificate for at least 18 months before the OOW certificate of competency will be issued.
