MCA Deck Certificates of Competency

MCA Certificates of Competency (CoC’s) are internationally recognised qualifications for Masters and other Officers of the Watch in line with the requirements of the STCW convention. Each one has qualifying requirements that you need to meet before you can apply to the MCA for a Notice of Eligibility (NOE) for an Oral Examination. The qualifying requirements are a combination of seagoing experience and training as well as medical fitness.

This course is for skippers of vessels less than 16.5m.   The course forms part of the under Seafish Under 16.5m Skippers Certificate. The Seafish 5 day Navigation and Watchkeeping course is intended for anyone taking a navigational watch and skippers of vessels less than 16.5m operating beyond 20nm miles of a safe haven.

NAEST (NAVIGATION AIDS, EQUIPMENT AND SIMULATOR TRAINING) – OPERATIONAL LEVEL

The NAEST (Navigational Aids, Equipment and Simulator Training) operational level course is designed to provide candidates with the skills to maintain safe navigation through effective use of electronic navigation systems. This is a 4 week course, please nor it does not include ECDIS. NAEST training is a mandatory requirement for all MCA Certificates of Competency above OOW 500GT inclusive.

GMDSS GOC – GENERAL OPERATORS CERTIFICATE

The GMDSS GOC (General Operator’s Certificate) is the highest level of radio operator’s licence available to the professional mariner. It meets all STCW conditions and is a requirement for unlimited MCA Certificates of Competence. The GMDSS GOC permits the holder to operate the radio installation on board any vessel operating in any Sea Area, with additional responsibility for equipment testing and undertaking any emergency communications.

ECDIS OPERATIONAL

The aim of the ECDIS Operational course is to train Bridge Watchkeeping Officers and other interested personnel in the use of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems. The essential legal and theoretical background to the use and carriage of ECDIS is covered in sufficient detail to allow the student to use the systems correctly and safely. Regulation II/1, II/2 and II/3 of the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended, and Tables, A-II/1, A-II/2 and A-II/3 of the STCW Code. This training meets the learning outcomes of IMO Model Course 1.27, delivered over a period of at least 40 hours.  Successful completion of this course will result in the issue of STCW certification for generic ECDIS training (to IMO 1.27) and Transas Navi Sailor 4000 ECDIS Type Specific equipment training.
