GOC – General Operators Certificate
About This Course
The GMDSS GOC (General Operators Certificate) is the highest level of radio operator’s licence available to the professional mariner. It meets all STCW conditions and is a requirement for unlimited MCA Certificates of Competence.
The GMDSS GOC permits the holder to operate the radio installation onboard any vessel operating in any Sea Area, with additional responsibility for equipment testing and emergency communications.
What We Cover
Classroom teaching for the GMDSS GOC is a balanced mixture of teaching and practical sessions to consolidate the skills and procedures taught and achieve the required standard.
The course covers the practical operation of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS); Masterplan, components and how they work together as well as SOLAS procedures for transmission and reception of Distress, Urgency and Safety Communication across all platforms.
We also cover:
- MF/HF/VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
- MF/HF Radiotelephony
- VHF Radio
- Navtex Receiver
- Inmarsat C Telex
- Inmarsat C EGC
- Fleet Safety Voice Communications
- Iridium GMDSS
- Portable survival equipment – EPIRB, SART, AIS-SART, Handheld VHF
- SOLAS Distress, Urgency & Safety communications
- GMDSS Logkeeping
- GMDSS Checks and Tests including Battery Maintenance
- Radio regulations, systems and good practice
Our Classroom Equipment
Each candidate has their own touch-screen Transas GMDSS simulator for practical sessions.
Assessment and Certification
There are 3 components to the exam.
Radio Communication and Logkeeping (Practical and Written)
- Solas Procedures and Radio Regulations (Written)
- Operational Performance (Practical)
The examiner will advise candidates of their result on completion of all 3 modules.
GOC Certificate Application
Western Maritime Training will complete and submit your GOC Certificate application to the MCA on your behalf using the information you provide.
Following successful completion of the course, we will complete the MCA Form MSF 4354 and submit it, together with your Course Completion Certificate, directly to the MCA.
To enable us to process your application, you will need to provide:
- A copy of the ID page of your valid passport.
- Two passport-style photographs.
- The personal information required to complete the MCA application form.
If a candidate fails, the exam resits must be taken within 2 weeks.
